If you can’t make it all the way down to Key West and happen to be in the Orlando area you must check out Old Key West Resort at Walt Disney World. Even if is just to check out the Key West like bar and try a signature drink. Really, at Walt Disney World.
We spend time in Orlando visiting our youngest. Each trip is centered around Disney, obviously. This last trip, I made a point to check out Old Key West resort. A little known fact is you can visit each of the resorts, even if you are not staying on the property. Each one offers a theme and unique feeling. This one, although it is a Disney version of Key West, brought the Key West vibe to Orlando.
1. The Gurgling Suitcase and signature cocktails
Our first stop was the Gurgling Suitcase. This little, hidden spot is along this picturesque island-hamlet. Not a lot of room, but has a very tropical feel. Try one of their two signature drinks … the Turtle Krawl or the Sultry Seahorse. The Turtle Krawl mixes coconut and spiced rums with orange and key lime juices. My personal favorite is the Sultry Seahorse. This drink combines amaretto, creme de banana, pineapple juice, orange juice and a float of cherry brandy. Try the conch fritters… they will transport you back to the Keys.
2. A hammock for an afternoon nap
Just like Key West, this place has a small beach. Not along the water, but tucked away with hammocks providing the perfect spot for an afternoon nap. Wander through the grounds and you will feel transported to a quieter place, away from the hustle of the Disney parks and Orlando.
3. Water taxi to Disney Springs
Grab a drink to go and head on over to the water taxi. This resort offers water taxi service directly to Disney Springs. Nothing better than cruising the canal with a drink in hand.
Next time you are in Orlando and want to experience a little bit of Key West, stop by the Old Key West resort and enjoy a cocktail.
